Pain In The Neck

Neck pain is one of the most common types of pain you may experience. Do you know why we get neck pains?

REASONS WHY WE CAN DEVELOP NECK PAIN:

  • Constantly looking down into your phone, laptop or tablet
  • Continuous forward head position
  • Lying on your belly with the head turned to one side
  • Looking down into your phone while traveling in a car, or other vehicle.

HOW CAN THE FORWARD HEAD POSTURE CAN CAUSE NECK PAIN?

When your head is ahead of your body, the amount of stress that is borne by the neck is too high. Our head weighs almost 5 kgs when it is properly aligned over the shoulders. When your head starts to lean forward it exerts 15-20 kgs of weight, which is too much for the neck muscles to bear, thus causing the pain.

HOW CAN LYING ON YOUR BELLY CAUSE NECK PAIN?

Sleeping on your belly with the head turned to one side causes wringing of the neck muscles for the whole night. There are interlocking joints between the vertebrae which may get locked, or friction may be caused amongst them because of sleeping on your belly. It can also cause pinching of the nerve into the arm.

HOW CAN LOOKING INTO YOUR PHONE IN A MOVING VEHICLE CAUSE PAIN?

While traveling in a vehicle, looking into our phone causes too much pressure on the neck muscles to read the the screen, especially to stabilise the neck in the moving vehicle. The changes in speed of the vehicle challenges the neck muscles, causing stress and fatigue. It can also be because of bending your spine continuously to read.

Avoiding these behaviours can greatly reduce the incidence of your neck pains. There are many other lifestyle factors than can cause such pains though. A POEM ON PAIN

(written by Indu)

A feeling that cuts through,
A feeling that stabs you.
The anguish that keeps you awake
The distress that makes you break
Yes i am talking about pain
It hurts a lot, no reason to cry in vain
Pain can be intermittent, it can be constant
How to deal with it, is what is most important
We try our level best to reduce it
Too many things that we can deduce from it
But remember that pain is temporary
It may be unbearable, it may be scary
Pain is body’s way to tell you that something is not right
Try to identify what is wrong and put a fight
A fight against pain, it bothered a lot
PHYSIOREHAB is here to identify what goes wrong, just give it a thought.
